The “Pretty” Gene Means Popularity?

My Honest Opinion 30 May 2008 | Comments

Disclaimer I’m letting out a bomb here.

I want to say this, I am sick… Sick and tired of the how being pretty means popular.

I’m sick and tired of how everything in this world is deemed upon looks to first get around. I’m sick and tired of males oogling drooling over females just because they have to hills at the top and two hills at the bottom. I’m sick and tired that because these males have a fantasy of how women are suppose to look, or how they want their women to look, it has caused girls to become insecure with who they are.

I’m sick and tired to have to hear how women are put down just because of the way they look. I’m sick and tired of the fact of how some girls are given more attention than another just because – just -just because one girl happens to be slightly prettier. It is degrading, insulting and unfair if any body were to treat another person differently just because they are either to chubby, or have zits on their face, or happen to not be super HOT!

I hate the fact on how some people rate one another on their looks. Let me tell you a story of how I was rated.

I had a friend in class, i shall name her Silin and she had a boyfriend who happened to be from the same school as us, whom I shall name as Robby. I was hanging out at Silin’s house and this being her first bf, she gave him a call and was all girly. Thats fine, until of course she had to ask this “Robby, if you were to rate me in looks how would you rate me,” she mushed on the phone. On the other side Robby gave her an answer “Ten out of ten”…Like duh. Then she insisted very much on what was MY rating. She even asked it out loud in front of me to him. Even he was in an awkward situation. If he says I’m a ten he die.. if he says I’m not a ten i’ll get hurt. But hey… suck it up and accept the facts eh? Needless to say after she kept pestering him, he gave an answer. I got a seven out of ten”

Not bad eh… sure but how do you think a person will feel when you rate their looks. Bad enough, we are visual creatures and so the want to look good is always there. If someone so much as says somethings off on your physique… wow… you can so feel the pinch.

Makes me wonder why it is, that some celebrities or people just don’t give a care anymore on how they look. Why bother trying to look good, when it takes so much of work and then you are still going to be seen as the person called the “pretty gene”.

And you know pageants? I think they are painful to girls. Why are beauty pageants celebrated so much international and why can’t it be for Guy pageants as well? Why do the women have to be subjected to something like the looks to get by….

I’m going through a few things in my head right now and this has been an accumulated thought process that kinda just blew up today. It got heightened even more when I was looking at Estee Lauder model search which is on right now. One of us made a comment of how some of the girls have potential because of the looks.

But i argue that for modeling it’s not about looks but rather how well you can pull of a pose for the camera. Cause in the end that pose is going to get someone to buy a product. Looks sure.. but hello there is photoshop.

Then Randy Khoo gave a lovely comment on girls trying out for modeling here in KL.

“To be frank, beauty doesn’t count these days…

Coz EVERY pretty girl all over the country will aim to come KL and make a break…
Everywhere also leng looi… so common la…

Skin deep beauty just means that you have good genes… Nothing else..
Good make up means you got skill and money…

What’s rare is :
Good Energy, A great Personality & a great Outlook of Life…
That Win Pageants my friend… hahahaha”

I throw my hat of to that and also clap. Cause I’m glad for once I get to hear some sort of understanding by the opposite gender and an even compassionate one at that. It’s true, if you have personality. My gosh it doesn’t matter how you look on the outside, but people will be able to see you look beautiful even from the inside. To see an inside beauty shine right out, is rare, but it is possible. To me, that’s beauty and not the “pretty gene”.

i'm surprised Po (koksenwai) didn't say anything about his thoughts on the beautiful people. he has a whole argument for that. i won't say anything more for fear of being repetitive of your other commentors. but your post reminded me of Beauty and the Geek - the reality tv series? have you watched it? plenty of bimbos on that realise that there's more to the personality than just looks, and that some of the nicest guys they've ever met are the ones on that show. likewise for guys - they find out their stereotypical view of girls isn't necessarily right - that bimbos can be nice and (somewhat) smart and talented.

btw just saw your pics with linessa n lincoln, and linessa hasn't changed, but lincoln has grown !!

and ditto. u're already born with the pretty gene!!

Erm.....In this era, some wondered why pretty = popular and some even went to length to argue that this point is sickening!
Perhaps in the near future some may argue personality = popular and why those with bad personality are shun away just as how unpretty people are, these days

*clap clap* well said! i totally agree pretty means having enough financial resources to doll yourself up. and please, even pretty is subjective. some girls are deemed pretty just cause they show lotsa flesh in their dressing and not cos they have good features. i would like to argue the pretty thing from a 1) evolutionary perspective and 2) psychological perspective. haha. in a nuthshell, girls doll themselves up because they want to attract mates. men generally want younger females because youth signifies the ability to concieve see. and i guess humans are shallow and judge others by their apperances since they usually dont have the time/mental resources to spend getting to know someone in depth. thus our outward exterior serves as a marker for whatever lies within. hahahaha. [/end psychology lecture] :P

That is really a good point. I never thought of it till u mentioned it. But interesting how in the animal kingdom it is the opposite.. in terms of look. but the courting is pretty much the same. Only that the male uses their looks to get the female..hmm..

It's a fact that people are superficial, to a certain degree when it comes to mate selection. It's an integral part of our evolutionary makeup. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, seriously. It's your own funeral if you choose a partner with an obnoxious personality ya?

I believe that the problem begins when some people believe that they have the right to pass judgment on another person's looks. While another person may be sexually unappealing to you, it does not give you the right to, err... be an asshole.

It's ok to be superficial, we all do it anyway and it helps us make our initial assessments of the opposite sex. But don't take it too far as it can cloud our judgment, and it's certainly not ok to be an asshole.

    Nuff said. (:

It's actually pretty weird if you look at nature. In nature, it's usually the MALES that need to be "pretty" so as to court females during the "mating season". Look at the peacock and the peahen as a very good example - the peacock, the MALE of the species, has resplendent tail feathers to attract females to mate with him. The peahen, the FEMALE, is just..... brown. Nothing outstanding, nothing fancy.

Lions are another example. The male has nice manes, and they use this to attract females. The females, the lionesses, are plain by comparison.

It's only us humans and certain species of primates (ie monkeys without tails) that are reverse - the females are the ones doing the attracting.

I've been wanting to ask, who's that pretty gene you're hugging in the pic in your banner? He's got good pretty genes. :)
  • aronil
Hey Queerie :) well i dunno about that..all the umm freebies..... lol but for you boy, good looks just seem to be your fall lol. Hahah i've seen your top 10 males...phew
  • aronil
Hahaha it's here :) i see your comment, had to be moderated lol. You're right too man. it's a crime from both sexes.. but i suppose to reason i take it that the males are the ones who started is because it all started back in the days when females were subjected to the males and they had to follow everything that the males said or wanted them to do. I mean pity the poor girls whose feet were bound in China because their parents wanted them to not run away from their husbands.. and cause tiny feet were considered dainty my gosh... or the days of the corset And awwwwww man. That's really sweet on you wanting a girl like that, I'm glad to hear that :)

Yeah should be... but one can't help feel that beauty cause you to be measured. I mean say you want to make friends or something, sometimes I find either myself or other girls are treated differently because of it. Either that or its the case of the person being the 'weirdo' in a group. Of course I'm blessed to be normal and not defaced in any manner too. Sigh sad.. thinking life's unfair here, when there are things that are more unfair to other ppl.

agreed! thats spot on from randy. however, the culprits for this crime come from both sexes, dont you agree? "pretty" is objective...but everybody's taste is different.....hence "beauty is in the eye of the beholder". now, "attractiveness" is subjective.........you can be as pretty as Melissa Maureen, but with an attitude of a jerk, your attractiveness-level will be less than ZERO. for a life partner...i will only settle for someone is attractive to me, and being 'pretty' is not on top of the list.

    Sigh. Totally agreed.

Seeing that I'm also playing on the same "team" its worst. Good looking boys tend to get more attention and of course expensive gifts. Wouldn't you like for some one to buy you a Coach bag or a Gucci dress or an IPod. Yep. Its feisty on this side of the fence. Oh not to mention passes for events and of course the free flowing sex.

    This totally sucks!

Well I think this sort of thing everyone needs to take it with a pinch of salt lah. Guys will be guys and girls will be girls. Beauty is not a measurement of self worth. But can't deny that beauty is prized by everyone too. I'm just thankful i have 2 ears, 2 eyes, 1 nose and too many mouth :P
