Do you like taking food excursions? Like food trips to different states but don’t have the time to drive there? Would you like to try some food from Melaka without having to go to far? Then for this Ramadhan, why don’t you go ahead and try out Essence at Sheraton Imperial Hotel! The food buffet theme of this Ramadhan month, they are bringing Melaka to you!

You will be dining to the wonderful delicious cuisine prepared by Chef Jamsari and his team of chefs!

Experience the distinctive culture of Baba Nyonya cuisines which consists of Chinese, Portugese, Dutch, Indian, British, and Malay influences. Also known as Peranakan cuisine, the main ingredient in many dishes would mainly consist of Belacan which is a Malay variety of shrimp paste. Samples of Peranakan dishes on the buka puasa buffet are Nyonya Chap Chia, Pongteh Chicken, Nyonya Duck Curry, Black Pepper Crab, Pajeri Nenas Peranakan, Nyonya Kari Kepala Ikan Merah, Ikan Jenahak Masak Tauchu and more.

Ever since he started his first job at the age of 21, Malay Chef Jamsari has been besotted with food. While he personifies happiness and is chatty amongst his friends, he makes no compromise when it comes to creating authentic and traditional Malay cuisines. ‘I love to cook Malay dishes because it is an incredible challenge! The spices have to be just right and it takes great skills and patience to cook most of the dishes to perfection. The balance is all about preparing it without under or over cooking it. Tricky, but I like it,’ says this fun-loving chef.

Set in a dinning hall with under an expansive skylight that lets in ample natural sunlight, your gastronomical journey at Essence begins off on a high note. You’ll be impressed with the amazing buffet spread that spans the hall from one end to the next.

Beside the Roasted lamb you can then have your pick at the asian appetizers. You have your keropok or jeruk.

Would you like to make a date with some dates? hehhe. Look at that selection!

Here’s just one of the highlights of the Peranakan Cuisine. Do not miss the opportunity to sample the restaurant’s signature favourite – Roasted Whole Lamb with Nyonya Sambal Marination and Roasted Potatoes.

Take a look at all the cheeeeeeesssseee. Cheese and crackers yummers!

Look at the very colourful spread at the Malay Cuisine corner, where you can find emang, ulam, ketupat, paru goreng, ikan masin, rojak etc.

This is one specialty not to be missed. The satay!!! Oh my gosh, the chicken, beef, deer meat were all so tender. I really enjoyed the chicken satay, and the tempura was pretty good too! Usually you would eat satay with the peanut sauce, but honestly you could just eat the meats as is, and you would still be able to enjoy the succulent meat.

You’ve also got your roti canai. More to choose from… Indian dishes; masala fish, lamb vindaloo, naan… Nice!.

Assam pedas is a dish close to Chef Jamsari’s heart as he believes this is THE dish Melaka is best known for. Be prepared to take on a spicy gastronomical journey when you stop by this stall.

Me with Chef Kamarudin, holding the asam pedas he prepared at the Asam pedas stall. ^_^

Choose your own contents for the asam pedas; red snapper, stingray, mackerel, sea bass, clams, cockles, crabs, snails, prawns, beef, lamb, ox-tail… and vegetables. In the picture is walauwei blogger Jason helping me pick my asam contents hehe.

2 types of assam pedas sauces, with distinctive tangy fragrant of tamarind will assault your senses. In addition to the usual assam pedas sauce, there will be the Assam Pedas Daging Tetel sauce – which is a true Melakan recipe. Each night, Chef Jamsari will prepare a variety of assam pedas dishes showcasing 5 or 6 types of fish, beef, prawns, crabs and a variety of vegetables.

One thing you can’t missout in Melaka is the Satay Celup! Where you dip your seafood or meaty favourites into a sauce pot and have it cooked in the delicious heat! i remember when i made a trip down to Melaka, i had Satay Celup at the forsaken hour of 3am in the morning at some stall by the road side! Never again! But this is the kind of food you have to experience at least once. Thankfully at Essence you can experience it in comfort and style hehe.

Right next to the satay Celup are all your yummy dim sums. Nothing spells out asian, like dim sum dishes. My personal favourite out of the everything there, the red bean pau!!! i’m a huge fan of “Tau Sar Pau”.. droool!!

Fresh oysters!

Here’s one thing you can’t miss out from Melaka, their famous Melaka Chicken Rice Balls! Have your chicken either steamed or roasted!

Want a break from all the fried food, you can also have something from the sushi bar!

Ooohh one of my favourite local food, kutu piring, that’s shown on the left.

You can’t not make a trip to the fruit bar, where you will have your traditional fruit favourites, such as duku langsat, rambutan, and mangosteens, just to name a few.

I was fascinated by the dessert room at Essence. I hadn’t realised it was a dessert room, till Mynn started roaming the red room with her camera. i really thought it was just for decoration. Walking into the cozy glass room, the red shelves are adorned with all sorts of sweet goodies. I was spoilt for choice! and oooo my shoes match the room haha.

No buka puasa fare is complete without tempting desserts. You will not be disappointed with the array of sweets the culinary team has created for this special occasion. Tantalise your taste buds with traditional favourites like Seri Muka, Kuih Lapis, Kuih Talam, Bengkang Bunga, Kasui, Bingka Ubi, Ang Ku, Kuih Gandus, Onde Onde Buah Melaka, as well as other alluring desserts – Cheese Cake, Blueberry Creme Brulee, Chocolate Banana Cake, Carrot Cake, and variety of cool Ice Creams, amongst others.

Seriously my favourite dessert of the night. I don’t get to eat this all the time ok! It’s Baklava!!! OHMYGOSH!!! Baklava! What is it? It’s an Turkish dessert, although it’s more known as a favourite Greek dessert and it’s not easy to make, in fact it hard to find good ones in KL. Baklava is made of layers of phyllo dough filled with honey, walnuts and pistachios. i was first introduced to this delectable dessert by my mommy dearest hehe.

Taking a snap with Evelyn from Sheraton Imperial with my favourite room of the buffet, the dessert room!

Under the sea..under sea.. down where it’s wetter, down where it’s better.. take it from meeee

LOL that was the first song that came to my head when i was told RedFM Late Night Love Songs was giving away this wonderful pass to the Champagne and Oyster Soiree at 7atenine! Ooooh bliss to be entertained by a lovely band, served with a delicious french bubbly and freshly shucked oysters.

So what was the event all about? This “Champagne & Oyster Soiree” happens to the first of its kind in Kuala Lumpur .The Champagne and Oyster Soiree was in conjunctions with World Oyster Day. A night where you are permitted to be flamboyant and possible act like a Posh Spice.

Here’s a bit of info on the Oyster Festival

The Oyster Festival originated as a hometown parade honouring Theodore Roosevelt before evolving into the largest outdoor festival on Long Island, under the auspices of the Oyster Bay Rotary. Every year, more than 200,000 visitors flock to an Indian-summer weekend on the waterfront in downtown Oyster Bay – drawn by live entertainment, Tall Ships, top-notch artisans, pirate shows, midway rides, and the iconic oyster eating and shucking contest. And of course…the Food Court, where volunteer chefs and culinary pros work side by side, cooking and serving dozens of unique oyster, clam and other seafood concoctions along with traditional festival fare. Nothing is duplicated and everything is all for a good cause –funding many local non-profit organisations.

Kuala Lumpur, June 22 – Oysters are popularly celebrated in festivals in various manifestations around the world. A day dedicated to celebrate and commemorate oysters is all the rage in European continents. Now it is Kuala Lumpur’s turn to enjoy a full-fledged oyster tribute… thanks to 7atenine!

7atenine’s first oyster gala christened “A Champagne and Oyster Soiree” held tonight was celebrated in conjunction with the World Oyster Day. This marvelous mollusk got a larger than life treatment with a 2 hour free flow Nicolas Feuillate champagne and fresh Irish oyster feast, a pearl fashion show, live jazz performance, some oyster facts and trivia challenge.

All guests received an exclusively-crafted mother of pearl door gift and one lucky person walked away with a RM6,000 pearl necklace in a lucky draw conducted at the end of the event – compliments from Edward Kong South Sea Pearls.

International seafood importer, Tim Boucat of Southern Rock Seafood, was on hand to enlighten all on interesting oyster insights which included farming and shucking of oysters.

What do sausages, sauerkraut and beer have in common?

They are all part of the authentic-styled cuisine from Germany at the Weissbrau Bistro and Bar located at the very happening Pavilion! I had the pleasure of attending the launch of their new menu. And i have to say, i was already in love with the food.. but that night particularly so – because i had just recovered from a mild illness so it was absolutely fabulous to taste such lip-smacking good food. My tummy was very well satisfied. ^_^ My thoughts on the food here.. you gotta love every single bit of it. If you happen to be a porkloin lover, you’re going to have a ball of a time at Weissbrau.. On top of that you get to watch your favourite football match while pigging out to some awesome food!

The Western Outlet that features a wide selection of German cuisine that serves pork specialties, imported draught & bottled beer at two great locations; Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur and Straits Quay Penang.

The word Weissbräu is a combination of German word ‘Weiss’ for white and bräu for brew, which refers to as white brew or white beer (Most popular and common beer in Germany).

Weissbräu menu, compiled by Master Chef Pascal Schnyder from Luzern, Switzerland, is divided into lighter dishes suitable for lunch, such like varieties of sandwiches, roast of the day with the wide ranges of homemade and imported sausages and cold cuts are available at the counter for quick take-away too.

You can check out the menu here.

Executive Chef Pascal Schnyder has worked with the team at Weissbrau from Day 1. His 2011 challenge has been to revolutionise the menu and create even further regional favourites to offer at Weissbrau. Pascal is an accomplished Chef, who in addition to being the Executive Chef of Weissbrau, which sees him creating the menu, training the chefs, and looking after quality control, also owns and operates his own resort restaurant concept in Thailand. With an extensive career behind him, Pascal has worked in some high profile kitchens with some equally-amazing Chefs, and brings this to Weissbrau through not only his creativity, but his adherence to authenticity.

So let’s see what happened at the launch.

Mad Sally were the wonderful performers of the night! five young, handsome, daring and totally mysterious men decided to make a band… but not just any band, oh no …. they decided to form Mad Sally. The boys of Mad Sally are easily the best thing to hit music since the last thing that everyone thought was quite good.

Here’s the thing, i’m not a huge foodie person, for very weight related reasons. But i always do enjoy a good meal whenever i manage the time to chill out with friends. It was a pleasure and a wonderful lunch outing with a friend of mine, Farrell. He has been consistently raving about this new Italian Restaurant situated along Jalan Ampang. Very close to Glen Eages and Great Eastern Mall. if you’ve noticed this white building that just sprouted from no where with big words stating “Nihonkan” and a big Papa Rich sign – then yes that’s the building i’m talking about. ^_^

That is also the home of Spasso Milano! Which currently at the moment has a fantastic promotion running for their lunch period. Scroll on down to see the promo!

Below Spasso Milano is Papa Rich, for those who want dishes that are closer to our local taste buds.

Let’s now talk about Spasso Milano and the great food. Spasso Milano is contemporary Italian restaurant which offers cuisine which represents the gambit of all things Italian. Simplicity and understated elegance is the only way to describe the environment. Designed with the busy business professional in mind, as well as the family, and everything in-between, Spasso provides for different levels of relaxed dining. With a separate bar, outdoor veranda, poolside area and formal dining room, Spasso offers an opportunity for everyone to sit back and enjoy the gastronomic sensations prepared by Chef Felice. Nothing represents the Italian lifestyle quite the way Spasso Milano does.

So here’s the promo i was talking about. For just the buffet you only need to pay RM18. But if you want you just top up a lil bit more and for RM21 you get the Buffet AND a main course! i was soooo spoilt!

Here’s the Lunch Main course menu.

The setup is very cozy and classy, with minimalist designs all around you. White and all things simple. The contrast of colours i would like to think comes from the medium range of food they have for lunch/brunch.

Here are some shots of what was available at the buffet area.

oh goshhh i’m so hungry no looking at all this >.<

I decided to go ahead with one main dish

and here’s a shot of the exterior of the building. just as you enter from the side entrance to Papa Rich. No you aren’t allowed to jump in. But i can imagine it would be very nice for a simple party or gathering by the bar. ^_^

A very worthwhile buffet if I do say so myself. Go check it out and try it while the promotion is still on!

Hmm yet another food post.. this doesn’t sound too good for me. :S

I’m a huge sucker when it comes to trying new things and seeing something that sounds or looks interesting.I’ve been spending a bit more time recently at One Utama because of a huge malfunction which i will blog about on another post. While settling my malfunction (and no it was not a wardrobe one!!) – I stumbled onto the new little tea-time snack place called Mr Baoz. Apparently the place just opened up a few days ago. On the 9th of April to be exact.

I don’t know when this picture was taken, but it definitely wasn’t on the day I went there. Barely anyone had heard of the place.

So i happily decided to go and try it. It’s not everyday that you see a shop selling all sorts of weird but could be tasteful looking paos. They look a lot nicer on the flyer… I have to learn that that is all graphically edited and cooked to the point it’s too beautiful to eat! Just look at how beautifully faked the images are.. no way are they that pretty. lol

They come in 4 types of boxes i think. Singular, Three of a kind – lol – and 6 in a box.

So i gave Mr Baoz a try. And being greedy i decided to try the 6 in a box promotion.

(L-R: Viennese Cheese, Tri-Star Squid Roll, Crispy Red Bean Baoz, Winter Romance, Chocolate Custard and Roast Beef Baoz)

….. and expected la, it’s all pretty and not all that great. You pay aroun RM3.50 for one pao or baoz.. when you can get a nice char siew pao for less than 2. It’s an interesting concept, however i would not buy it in bulk next time. Probably if i’m really hungry and wanted a snack i’ll get it. Or i’ll just go back to my usual which is 1901 hotdog – if i really can’t tahan. Other than that I wouldn’t say hello to Mr Baoz anymore.

But if you still wanna give it a try just head on to the lowest ground floor at One Utama, go to where Cold Storage is located, walk around a bit and you’ll find Mr Baoz.

I’m saying Bye to Mr Baoz now. :S

Last week, I had to make a trip to go and buy at least four boxes of chocolate from Isetan. See Mister G’s mom, Aunty Rayean - is a florist and all her creations are beautiful, I’d recommend her for anyone who wants to get a bouquet of flowers – needed it for one of her clients, who made a specific request to send flowers with these chocolates that can only be bought in Isetan. Now I had no idea what chocolates these were, till that day. They were Royce Chocolates!

I wanna thank The Lord for a thing called Maxis 3G and blogs who blog about food. For if it weren’t for Suanie who mentioned it on her blog. i think I would’ve gone hunting for these chocolates all over the place.

Ok I’ve maybe passed the store a couple of times when I was at the supermarket level in KLCC but it never really caught my attention. All the more I shouldn’t be buying chocolates.

However while picking out the chocolates that Aunty Rayean needed, I decided to give the chocs a try as well. They were absolutely heavenly.

This is the one i tried which are shaped in little cubes.

Truffles delight.

There are either chocs with liqueur or non at all. When you po p them into your mouth, it’s pure ecstasy! The chocolate is not to hard where you have to chew or anything. Instead the texture is just right, where it melts onto your tongue. The liqueur in it is very mild so don’t worry your head on getting high. lol.

I managed to take a few more shots of the other chocolate delighties they had there. OooOOOOH wHeeeeee. I love choc!

Meaning of course in the end, other than buying for Aunty Rayean. I ended buying a box as well for myself to eat. Hohohohoho. Here is my very own Grand Marnier Royce Chocolates. I got these for about RM39. Ok la, a bit pricey but worth every bite!

Ahhh my very own Royce chocolate! Here’s what I enjoy the most about opening things wrapped. You get this very kiddish feeling inside, cause you look forward to the item inside the wrapping. With Royce chocolate, I found out that you need to keep the chocolates at 15 degrees celcius or lower. Reason being that these babies melt really easily, hence the wonderful taste in your mouth.

The chocolates were wrapped with an impressive heat insulator and inside that they had placed an ice pack on top. To ensure that the condition of the sweet heavenly chocs were in perfect condition.

After unwrapping everything you will be delighted of the sight of the goodies inside. Check it out, they provide a knife for you!

Ahhhhhh blissssssss ~~~~~~~~~~!!!! See me swoon with my chocs! Think of it like a bar of chocolate, just that everything has been cut up for you. Sprinkled with choco powder on top.

i heart my Royce chocolates!!
Everytime I head to Pavillion for a movie, I’ve always wanted to try this pizza snack that I keep passing by down at the food court area. There’s nothing overally fantastiv about it, just that I find the concept interesting. You have pizza in a bread cone. Hehehe it looked cool enough to eat It’s this small snack store called Kono Pizza.

The bread is shaped up in a cone and then they have all the pizza stuffing shoved into the little, medium or large cone. Think of a huge waffle cone but it’s some nice tasty partially crusty bread. I ordered the Roast beef so which means they will toast the bread cone first then only pop in the stuffing.

This how they toast the bread. You can see there’s another cone in there but stuffing already in it. I think that was a spaghetti something stuffing. So they needed to melt the cheese inside the bread… crap now I’m hungry.

Once the bread is a nice toasty brown the guy stuffed the beef and veggies into the cone.

This is the ready to eat look for the kono pizza. Yummy. Great for a small snack and well.. not too bad. A bit over priced though.

They have their own cone stand too that they will place inside the paper bag. Great stand up hehe. Now it won’t fall over the place. Feels like a savoury ice cream. Go try it when you’re at Pavillion walking around doing nothing. You can take a look at their online brochure.

I’m still a cupcake monster.

A while back I had flipped through this new magazine in town called Timeout KL. I must tell you this magazine is just filled with content and one of the articles that caught my attention was entitled “Cupcake Trend”.. or something like that. Anyway the only place i knew in KLCC that sold cupcakes was . I didn’t know that the Secret Recipe had been replaced by a new cafe called The Lawn. Sorry don’t have a pic of the place.. but I do have a pic of what was served at my table

After ordering, we are given a table number, which I think has got to be the cutest table number I’ve seen in a long time. A number seven popping out of a pot!

Nessa and I had ordered two cupcakes. Thing with cupcakes is that I’m a sucker for anything that just looks pretty and cute. I use to have a case where I wouldn’t eat them because i just wanted to look at them. You can read that .

This is some lemon vanilla cupcake. It looks real pretty eh? ^_^

Ah here’s the oreo cupcake. Not too bad.. been a while since I had oreo.

Overall the cupcakes are alright nothing that great, but just had to give the place a try out. I find that the cream was a tad too much and for the price of RM5 per cupcake, I’d rather buy one from which cost less and has a bigger serving.

After that we then headed to The Apartment. Yeah we still had a bit of a craving… or rather my sister wanted to just see if there was anything new.

Nothing new in terms of cupcakes there, just a new look.. it’s still a chocolate chip cupcake.

This however is what I want to drool about. This wonderful piece of Red Velvet cake just made me shoot to pastry heaven. Sigh… I’m not much of a sweet tooth, but a cake like this was tooo good. I bugged Nessa to go and learn how to make it. The icing was just delish!! Sighh… drool drool

Do some of you remember the Character Bubba Gump in Forrest Gump the movie? I’ll be very honest in saying that I still have not watched the movie properly but I can tell you that Bubba Gump is from that movie and had a significant role. Anyways me, Min Li and Nick Dorian met up last friday at The Curve to try out the new Shrimp restaurant called Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. The restaurant is named after the movie’s main characters Benjamin Bufford “Bubba” Blue and Forrest Gump, who was inspired to go into the shrimping business by Bubba.

So lets a have my review of that short experience. The place is located at the second floor of The Curve along The Walk.

The menu consists mostly of shrimp dishes, but also other seafood, as well as Southern and Cajun cuisine, due to the main character Forrest coming from Alabama. On the company’s menu, the company’s CEO says (quoting from the movie) that “shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo, pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried, there’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. Th-that’s about it.” – Wikipedia

The whole setup of Bubba Gump really reminded of my days eating out at Roadhouse Grill, which was a favourite place of mine till Chillies came about. What gave me the sense of deja vu was the bucket on the tables hehe.

Hehehe see that buckey there with the smiling shrimp – which reminds me of the mafia shrimps in a ‘Sharktale’ lol. Yeha I’m reminded by a lot of things. In Roadhouse Grill it’ll be filled with peanuts and after opening a shell you just throw it on the floor. Here at Bubba Gump, it has some toilet roll (tissue la) and i think ketchup in there. That Chain is hooked up to a pink pong bat which is yet another menu! So cool – don’t have a pic of it though

Moving on to the signs on the table. I love the concept of it. See when you want to call a waiter, you don’t do the usual kissy wissy noises you make at the mamak, or raise your hand and wave it about like a mad person. No.. you just flip the sign that says “Stop Forrest Stop”.

This is to tell waiters passing by “Oi, I need some service here” hehe. Then once you are done with whatever demands you request from the waiter, you flip over another sign that says…

“Run Forrest Run”.

Just like in the movie when he was running away from the bullets. This sign means “Ok I’m done, you can move along now” ^_^ Sounds so patronizing in a way lol.

Originally i was flipping through the menu and came across the steak section and Nick flipped me back to the shrimp page immediately, stating. “You are at Bubba Gump.. you order SHRIMP!! not Steak!!!”

OK OK.. i’m sorry.. I was just looking… sheeeeshhhh ^_P

Nick had ordered some alcoholic drink which was called Malibu, Midori, Orange Juice. He ordered the drink because it had jap words in it.. hehehehe so cute.

and a dish with prawns on the side and rice, called I’m Stuffed Shrimp.

While Min Li and I shared a pasta … oooh yum. oh yeah it’s called Of Course We Have Scampi!“.

The prawns served in one dish goes on for ever.. oooh yeah!! You know how some people like to save their prawns at the side of plate, cause there are only like one or two in a serving? They’ll scoot it to one side and not touch it till the very end.. haha. Here you don’t have to do that haha, if not it’ll be overkill. That’s how many prawns there are in one dish.

I’d go back there again, but it was a tad bit pricey. Overall ambiance and food was good so me likey!!

I’m to be named Cupcake Admirer soon, not Cupcake Monster.

After buying a cupcake… I purposely buy it so I can stare at how pretty it looks. But the other, i met up with a friend to go cupcake hunting. The first place i went to for cupcakes was The Apartment which some might remember my extreme fetishness of how lovely they look. On Friday we tried CupCake Chic located at the Curve, you will see it just before you head on down to the carpark area, next to Secret Recipe.

I will say that the cupcakes here are not as lovely to look at as The Apartment, but they make up for it with taste and size. It’s a tad bit bigger than the one’s I originally had at The Apartment and man were they filling! We each had one cupcake and this is what we had.

They were each at RM4.50. Not too bad a price for something at tea time and to keep you full for a bit.

This is a chocolate on chocolate version called On Cloud Nine. It was nice, but i found it to rich. Plus the marshmallows gave it a cute look, but boy was i guilty after that.

Othello was a better mix with Chocolate as the cake and Vanilla as the Icing. That is one thick amount of icing

Overall not too bad, and they have different cupcakes everyday. I didn’t bother putting it up here as you can check out on their main site.
Till the next cupcake hunt.
