In short it talks about how the lack of food and poverty has been effected by globalization. There are 10,000 people dying everyday due to hunger and malnutrition. This short film shows a forgotten portion of the society. The people who live on the refuse of men to survive. What is inspiring is the hope and spirituality that never left this people.

I really do not have much to say on it, because all i feel is sympathy and can only feel thankful for what I have in life. It amazes me how in our own life we worry so much about the trivial things when there are harder situations out there in the world.

Do you know what it’s like to feel hungry? Of course you do and naturally you will head on down to the fridge in a comfy home pop it open to get a snack. That settles hungry.

But what about extreme hunger? Do you know what it’s like to not eat at all for a whole day? And I’m not talking about fasting which allows you to settle your tummy either in the morning or at night. I’m talking about where you far from the grasps of food. You are not able to find any and worse still you can’t touch any.

Imagine if it wasn’t you, but it was this child in the picture..

And it is a reality….

Did you know that

“Half the world — nearly 3 billion people — live on less than two dollars a day”

Those of us like you and me, who are more fortunate can make a difference for those people who do not have enough in their pockets to feed not only themselves but their children. Thanks to my friend Joanne that World Vision is having a campaign called “Skip A Meal Today”.

Join in the fight to conquer hunger. All you have to do is just skip one meal and use that money to provide a bowl of rice or noodles in front of a hungry child in Sabah or North Korea. It’s that simple!

Skip breakfast : RM 10 – Will give 2 Orang Asli children three decent meals a day
Skip lunch : RM 20 – Will feed 5 Orang Asli children three meals a day
Skip dinner : RM50 – Will provide an entire year’s worth of lunch for a North Korean child

Click here to go to the actual site of Skip a Meal Today Campaign

Or go to the World Vision blog to view a video of a man who tried to starve himself to understand what it meant to be in hunger.

If you want to also help spread the word and support this cause use this banner.

I came across this site through my favourite web tutorial space, Ndesign-studio. There are many charitable organisations out there, and here is one particular one that I rather enjoy playing with and helping out the community at the same time. Free Rice, is a site that lets you improve your vocabulary and end world hunger at the same time. Bit by bit. It is a sister site of Poverty.com started by John Breen and this organization hopes to end world hunger.

How Do you play the game?
The minute you go into FreeRice you are given a main word and four other words. You are suppose to figure out which word has the same meaning as the main word. E.g.

Lug means :

itemize fantasize reveal haul

Correct answer here is Lug means haul.

When you get a correct word, you win 20 grains of rice and this just keeps increasing and increasing as you play. The free rice you are giving away to those in need is already paid for by the advertisers that appear at the bottom of the page everytime you click to go to a new word.

A bit on poverty and hunger

About 25,000 people die every day of hunger or hunger-related causes, according to the United Nations. This is one person every three and a half seconds, as you can see on this display. Unfortunately, it is children who die most often.

Yet there is plenty of food in the world for everyone. The problem is that hungry people are trapped in severe poverty. They lack the money to buy enough food to nourish themselves. Being constantly malnourished, they become weaker and often sick. This makes them increasingly less able to work, which then makes them even poorer and hungrier. This downward spiral often continues until death for them and their families.

There are effective programs to break this spiral. For adults, there are “food for work” programs where the adults are paid with food to build schools, dig wells, make roads, and so on. This both nourishes them and builds infrastructure to end the poverty. For children, there are “food for education” programs where the children are provided with food when they attend school. Their education will help them to escape from hunger and global poverty.

Hunger and World Poverty Sources: United Nations World Food Program (WFP), Oxfam, UNICEF.

Note: The world hunger map display above is representational only and does not show the names and faces of real people. The photographs are computer composites of multiple individuals.

So what are you waiting… go get learning some english and save some lives
